    Ammonia-free hair colour: who it suits and why

    Ammonia-free hair colour: who it suits, sensitive scalp, patch test, pregnancy and natural shades. What to know before your next colour.

    Ammonia-free hair colour is attracting more and more clients in Casablanca: less smell, a gentler feel on the scalp and hair that keeps its shine. But it is not right for every colour goal, and it does not replace certain precautions. Here is who it really suits, what it can and cannot do, and how to prepare for it properly.

    What is ammonia-free colour?

    In a classic permanent colour, ammonia opens the hair cuticle so pigments can get in and the colour can lift if needed. It works well, but it smells strong and can dry out the fibre, especially on hair that is already sensitised.

    Ammonia-free colour uses a different, milder alkaline agent to open the hair. The result: a much softer smell, a more comfortable processing time and often a silkier feel afterwards. The trade-off is that its lifting power is limited.

    Who is it for?

    Ammonia-free colour is a particularly good fit if:

    • you want to stay close to your natural colour, enrich it, deepen it slightly or add a tone;
    • you have a sensitive scalp that tingles or feels tight with classic colour;
    • your hair is dry, fine or damaged and you want a kinder colour;
    • strong smells bother you;
    • you want gentle coverage for your first grey hairs.

    What it does not do well

    If your plan is to go from brunette to blonde, it is not the right tool: real lightening needs highlights or balayage or a stronger technique. On lots of very resistant grey hair, coverage can also fade sooner than with classic colour. Your stylist will tell you honestly during the consultation.

    Ammonia-free does not mean allergy-free

    This is the most important point in this article. Ammonia-free colour is still an oxidation colour: it can contain other dye ingredients that cause reactions in some people. It is more comfortable, but the allergy risk is not zero.

    The patch test

    Manufacturers require an allergy test 48 hours before every colour, even with a product you have used before:

    1. A small amount of product is applied behind the ear or inside the elbow.
    2. It is left for 48 hours, without washing the area.
    3. If there is redness, itching, swelling or burning, the colour is not done and you should see a doctor or dermatologist.

    If you have ever reacted to a hair dye, a black henna tattoo or a hair product, say so before any appointment.

    Colour and pregnancy: caution first

    Many mums-to-be assume "ammonia-free" automatically means "safe during pregnancy". That is not a rule. The right approach is simple: ask your doctor or midwife before any colour, especially in the first months. If they agree, your stylist can choose a technique that touches the scalp as little as possible and work in a well-ventilated space.

    Caring for your colour

    Ammonia-free colour is often gentler, so it needs a little care to keep its shine:

    • sulfate-free shampoo for coloured hair;
    • lukewarm rather than very hot water when rinsing;
    • a hydrating mask once a week;
    • protection from the sun and from straightener heat;
    • a fresh-water rinse after the sea or pool.

    Think about rhythm too: regrowth shows within a few weeks, and a root colour refreshes the top without recolouring all your lengths every time (see how often to do your roots).

    Ammonia-free colour at Chicas

    At Chicas Beauty & Spa in Aïn Sebaâ, Ammonia-free colour sits on the menu next to classic Colour and Root colour; allow about 120 minutes, plus the patch test 48 hours before. During the consultation your stylist tells you whether it can reach the shade you want, or whether Balayage or Highlights make more sense. Compare shades on your own photo in the online try-on Studio first, and send your questions on WhatsApp.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does ammonia-free colour cover grey hair?

    It covers first greys and scattered white hairs well. On very resistant or abundant grey, classic colour may last longer.

    Can ammonia-free colour lighten hair?

    Only very slightly. It is mainly for enriching, deepening or adding tone. For real lightening, balayage or highlights are the way.

    How long does it last?

    It depends on your hair and your routine. It can fade a little faster than classic colour, which is why a gentle shampoo matters.

    Is it safe for a sensitive scalp?

    It is often better tolerated, but a patch test is still essential. If you have a skin condition, ask a dermatologist first.
