BIAB nails explained: builder gel for natural nails
BIAB nails explained: how this builder gel reinforces and protects natural nails, who it suits and how it differs from Semilac and hard gel.
BIAB nails have become one of the most requested services in Casablanca nail bars, and with good reason: BIAB reinforces your own nail instead of hiding it under an extension. If your nails peel, bend or snap as soon as they pass your fingertip, this is very likely the technique you have been looking for. Here is how it works, who it suits and how it differs from regular gel.
BIAB nails: what are they?
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It is a builder gel that is softer and more fluid than traditional hard gel, brushed on like polish and cured under a UV or LED lamp.
What makes it special is that it has enough body to give the nail real structure, with a gentle curve in the centre called the apex that absorbs everyday knocks. The result is a nail that is stiffer, smoother and far less likely to break, while still looking thin and natural.
What BIAB does, and what it does not
- It reinforces natural nails and protects them while they grow.
- It can add a tiny bit of length to a nail that is already a little long, but it is not an extension.
- It can be worn clear, milky nude or with colour on top.
- It does not replace extensions if you want long nails from the very first appointment.
Who is BIAB for?
BIAB nails are ideal for natural nails that are weak, soft or peeling, and for women who want to grow their own nails rather than wear false ones. It is also a good bridge after extensions, when the nail plate needs support while it grows back.
It is less suitable if:
- you want long nails straight away, in which case you need extensions;
- you have an infection, a cut or a lifting nail plate: nothing should be applied, see a doctor or dermatologist first;
- you have reacted to gel or acrylic before, or noticed redness or itching around your nails after a gel service (a possible acrylate allergy): tell your technician before the appointment.
The gel difference: semilac, BIAB and hard gel
This is the question we hear most. The difference comes down to thickness and purpose.
- Semilac gel polish: a thin layer of colour, no structure. Best on nails that are already strong; here is how long Semilac lasts.
- BIAB: a soft reinforcing gel that thickens the nail slightly and makes it rigid. Best on fragile nails.
- Classic hard gel: thicker and harder, used to sculpt extensions and long shapes.
In short: semilac colours, BIAB reinforces, hard gel builds. If you mainly want length, our gel nail extensions comparison picks up from here.
What happens during a BIAB appointment
A careful BIAB application usually follows these steps:
- Prep: push back cuticles, remove the shine from the nail and cleanse it.
- A thin bonding base, cured under the lamp.
- The builder gel placed as a bead and floated to form the apex, then cured.
- Shaping and refining the surface for a slim finish.
- Colour or a clear finish, then top coat.
Your nails leave the salon stiff and glossy. Expect three to four weeks before regrowth really shows.
Aftercare and removal
To keep BIAB looking good, use cuticle oil every night, wear gloves for cleaning and never use your nails as tools. If an edge lifts, do not pull it.
When it is time to take it off, the product is filed down gradually, never peeled: our gel nail removal guide explains why.
A well applied, well removed BIAB protects your natural nail while it grows; a peeled BIAB leaves it thinner.
BIAB at Chicas
At the Chicas Beauty & Spa nail bar in Aïn Sebaâ, a BIAB appointment takes about 75 minutes. If your nails are already strong, Semilac gel polish or Gel + permanent polish may be enough; the Spa manicure looks after hands and cuticles, and Gel removal takes off an old set before a new one. Frequently asked questions
Does BIAB damage nails?
Not when it is applied on a nail prepped without over-filing and removed properly. Damage almost always comes from peeling it off.
How long does BIAB last?
Usually three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and your daily routine. Regrowth decides your next appointment.
Can I have colour on BIAB?
Yes, a colour or milky nude can go on top, or you can keep it clear for a polished natural look.
BIAB or extensions?
If you want to keep your own nails and make them strong, choose BIAB. If you want length right away, extensions are the better fit.
