    Semilac gel polish: how long it lasts and how to care for it

    Semilac gel polish explained: how long it really lasts, lamp curing, aftercare that works, allergy signs and why removal should never be rushed.

    Semilac gel polish is the go-to choice when you want clean, glossy nails for weeks without moving to extensions. It cures under a lamp, leaves the salon completely dry and survives the washing-up far better than regular polish. Here is what a nail technician in Casablanca would tell you about how long it really lasts, how to look after it and how to take it off without thinning your nails.

    What is semilac gel polish?

    Semilac is a semi-permanent polish system: a base coat, one or two coats of colour and a top coat, each one cured under a UV or LED lamp, usually 30 to 60 seconds per coat. Because it hardens instead of air-drying, it is tougher and shinier than classic polish.

    It does not add length or build structure. It colours and lightly protects your natural nail, which makes it ideal if you already like your nail length and simply want colour that stays put.

    Semilac or classic polish?

    • Classic polish: quick to apply and easy to remove at home, but often chips within days.
    • Semilac: slightly longer appointment, no drying time, lasts for weeks.
    • Removal: classic polish comes off in two minutes; semilac needs a proper removal, ideally in the salon.

    How long does semilac last?

    Wear time depends on nail prep, the quality of the application and your daily routine. Most clients get two to three weeks of neat wear. After that it is usually regrowth at the cuticle, not chipping, that tells you it is time for a refill.

    Things that shorten wear:

    • hands in hot water a lot (dishes, cleaning, hammam) without gloves;
    • very oily or very bendy nails that flex under the polish;
    • using your nails as tools to open cans or peel labels;
    • poorly prepared cuticles, which lift the edges.

    Casablanca's humidity is not a problem once the polish is cured, but salt water and beach sand can dull the top coat faster. A quick rinse in fresh water helps.

    Is semilac good for brittle nails?

    If your nails split and peel, a semilac gel polish can actually help. The cured layer adds a little stiffness and stops the tip from splitting, so many women finally manage to grow some length.

    The real risk is not the application but bad removal. Every time polish is peeled off, a thin layer of the nail comes with it, and that is how nails become thin, sensitive and brittle. If your nails are very soft, a BIAB application, which builds more structure, may suit you better. Ask your technician.

    Looking after your semilac between appointments

    A few habits make the difference between two weeks and three:

    1. Avoid very hot water for the first few hours after your appointment.
    2. Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning products.
    3. Use cuticle oil at night to keep the nail and skin supple.
    4. If a corner lifts, do not pull it: file the edge gently and book a removal.
    5. Never buff the surface yourself to "refresh" the colour.
    6. If the skin around your nails turns red, itchy or swollen after a gel service, it can be an acrylate allergy: tell your technician before your next appointment, and see a doctor if it persists.

    Removal: the step you never rush

    Semilac comes off by lightly filing the top coat, letting a suitable remover soften it and easing it off without force; our gel nail removal guide explains the method step by step. If you wear semilac back to back, plan the odd week off so the nail can rest and rehydrate. Nails do not actually need to "breathe": the break is about moisture and recovery.

    Never peel semilac off with your teeth or your other nails. It is the most common cause of damaged nails.

    Semilac at Chicas

    At the Chicas Beauty & Spa nail bar in Aïn Sebaâ, Semilac gel polish on natural nails takes about 60 minutes. Prefer to change colour often? Classic polish takes about 20 minutes. The Spa manicure looks after hands and cuticles, BIAB reinforces fragile nails, and Gel removal takes off an old set before the next one. Prices are on the treatment menu.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does semilac damage nails?

    A careful application and a proper removal do not damage the nail. Peeling the polish off and heavy filing are what thin it.

    Can I have semilac on very short nails?

    Yes, it works on any length. On short nails, nude or deep red shades look especially clean.

    How long does the appointment take?

    About 60 minutes at our nail bar: cuticle prep, base, colour and top coat, with a lamp cure after each coat.

    Can I get a new semilac right after removal?

    Yes, if the nail is in good condition. If it feels thin or sensitive, take a break or choose a strengthening option.
